The South Pacific is an area as rich in cultural history as it is in biodiversity and scenic beauty.  From the stunning coral of the Great Barrier Reef to the snow-capped peaks of New Zealand’s Southern Alps and the white sand beaches of the Fijian islands, explore the unique landscapes and cultures of these three countries. Through visits to Aboriginal, Maori, and Fijian communities, learn how indigenous cultures are managing to maintain traditions in increasingly diverse cultural landscapes. The population of Australia is approximately 22 million, with nearly 5 million living in Sydney.  New Zealand is home to a population of over 4 million. Fiji has a population of 850,000, most being indigenous Fijians. The strong British influence in Australia and New Zealand can be seen in their cuisine: meat pies, fish and chips, stews, and hearty breakfasts.  Recent immigration has brought along with it cuisine from the Mediterranean and Asia.  Traditional Fijian cuisine incorporates seafood, root vegetables, and coconut milk into many dishes as well as fresh tropical fruits.

Visa Information: U.S. citizens must obtain a tourist visa to enter Australia. Since a valid passport is a part of the visa application, it is important to obtain your passport well in advance of departure. Putney Student Travel provides detailed information about how to apply for a visa. Non-U.S. citizens must check local visa requirements, including requirements for countries passed through in transit.
